| At the beginning of 2004, the Haitian Education Project, Inc. (HEP) a non-profit organization providing community services was in need of a small, secure, and cost efficient network set-up for its new downtown office. As the onsite IT consultant, ASC was faced with a daunting challenge - meet a very short and strict deadline for the deployment of a LAN throughout a building with a limited wiring capacity. Working closely with the customer's group of volunteers, ASC setup a hybrid wired-wireless LAN system. A D-link router with a 4 LAN ports and one 108 MBPs wireless access point was setup as the gateway. Cat5 cable drops were run to all the offices where each office room had its own switch. The access point was setup for isolated computers or mobile users.
The D-link built-in firewall was used to protect the LAN from external attacks. A filter was enabled to allow only computers with a registered MAC address to use the LAN and the Access Point (this to prevent outsiders from using the wireless AP as an entry into the LAN. In addition ASC performed necessary upgrades on most of the PCs on the LAN to a standard platform with proper Antivirus and service packs and patch level. After implementation, HEP volunteers were now able to share files, applications and printers seamlessly as well as access the Internet when needed. This allowed the staff to perform their duties much more efficiently and greatly helped the organization achieve its primary objectives.
